Lowville Sees 4th Warmest May on Record with Below Average Precipitation Totals

Lowville, NY- Overall, Lowville saw temperatures well above normal during May, with below average precipitation levels, according to weather data compiled from the Northeast Regional Climate Center (dating back to 1893).

 

May finished with a mean average temperature (cumulative highs and lows) of 60.1 degrees in Lowville, a full 5.6 degrees above the normal mean average temperature for May in Lowville of 54.5 degrees. In terms of ranking, it was the 4th warmest May on record and warmest since 1975 (60.3 degrees). The warmest May on record for Lowville occurred in 1911 with a mean average temperature of 61.3 degrees, with the coldest May on record occurring in 1917 with a mean average temperature of 47.5 degrees for the month. The highest temperature of the month last month reached 88 degrees on May 23rd. The lowest temperature recorded last month was 38 degrees on May 7th, setting a record for the warmest lowest temperature of the month for May- previously at 37 degrees in 2019.

 

May saw 2.21 inches of total precipitation in Lowville, well short of the normal 3.39 inches for the month, ranking as the 35th driest May on record. The wettest May on record occurred in 1918, with 8.04 inches of precipitation recorded, while the driest May on record occurred in 1920, with just 0.39 inches of precipitation. Measurable precipitation was recorded on 15 days last month, with 5 additional days recording a trace amount. The most precipitation recorded on a single day last month was 0.51 inches, recorded on May 28th.

 

Lowville saw no new snow during May, with the average snowfall for the month just .20 inches (just 16 of the Mays on record have received snowfall in Lowville). The record for May snowfall is 3 inches, recorded in 1967. For the season, Lowville recorded 80.1 inches of snow (13 inches in November; 3 inches in December; 37.5 inches in January; 13 inches in February; 10.7 inches in March; 2.9 inches in April), well below the mean average of 119.5 inches for the season.
