Obituary: Birdella Mae Catlin, 84, Castorland

Description automatically generatedCastorland – Mrs. Birdella Mae (Bassette) Catlin, 84, died peacefully in the home of her daughter Lisa in Watertown, where she was surrounded by the love and support of her family while in the care of Hospice of Jefferson County.

 

Birdella was born September 30, 1939 in Watertown, a daughter of the late Arthur M. and Emily M. (Wicks) Bassette. She was graduated from Harrisville Central School and the Watertown School of Commerce. Birdella worked for several years for Lewis County through Head Start and with Lewis County Cooperative Extension. She and Dale operated The Birds Nest Bed and Breakfast in Castorland for several years also.

 

Birdella enjoyed helping others, as demonstrated by her work with Habitat for Humanity in Texas and Louisiana as well as joined her sisters in Christ on a mission trip to Haiti, Birdella was a true example of the hands and feet of Christ. Birdella enjoyed sewing and made numerous dresses and quilts for family and friends. She enjoyed scrapbooking and going to her Saturday morning T.O.P.S. group. She and Dale also enjoyed winter in North Fort Myers, Florida and in three short weeks would have celebrated 65 years of marriage.

 

Surviving are her beloved husband Dale Catlin, children; Bryan (Kay) Catlin, Lisa (Pat) Fitzpatrick, Stuart (Yvonne) Catlin and Lori (Darwin) Roes; grandchildren, ShyLeigh (Eric) Gushlaw, Kylie (Brandon) Miller, Aubrey (Dustin) Neal, Erica (Brandon) Boll, Tamara (Keyan) Deom, Alexas Catlin, Derek Roes, Sarah Fitzpatrick, Megan Catlin and Kerrigan Catlin; as well as 18 great-grandchildren and a brother Jack Bassette.

 

In addition to her parents, Arthur and Emily, Birdella was predeceased by two sisters, Eudora Guiles and Beth Schulz.

Visitation for Birdella will be held on Monday, May 6, 2024 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm and from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Salem Christian Fellowship Church in Beaver Falls. A funeral service will be held at the church on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 11:00 am with Pastor Joe Virkler and her son Bryan Catlin, co-officiating. Burial will be in the Hermon Cemetery, Hermon, New York.
