Demonstration Against the Criminalization of
Homelessness
Watertown, NY- Please join NRCIL on April 22nd
– April 26th for a Demonstration against the Criminalization of
Homelessness. NRCIL and the Mental Health Association of Jefferson County
(MHA) have collaborated with community members in support of a more
humanitarian approach to homelessness. At 8:30 am Monday April 22nd
we will pitch our tents at 210 Court St Watertown and at 5520 Jackson St,
Lowville, where we will camp out daily until April 26th. We
invite you to join us and bring your tents and sleeping bag down and camp
out with your community in front of the NRCIL offices in Watertown and
Lowville.
On April 22, the
Supreme Court will hear the case of City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Johnson,
this is the most significant Supreme Court case about the rights of people
experiencing homelessness in decades. The Supreme Court will determine
whether a local government can arrest or fine people for sleeping outside
when adequate shelter is not available. Criminalization is not a solution
to homelessness. This response to homelessness will simply make things
increasingly more difficult for individuals experiencing homelessness to
access the affordable housing, health services, and employment necessary to
exit homelessness.
Together, we can
put an end to archaic and dehumanizing approaches to homelessness, and
instead invest in proven and humane solutions, starting with affordable
housing and voluntary supportive services. Join the Demonstration!!
