Lowville Sees Warmest February on Record with Below
Normal Precipitation

Lowville, NY- Overall,
Lowville saw the warmest February on record last month with precipitation
levels well below average, according to weather data compiled from the Northeast
Regional Climate Center (dating back to 1893).
February finished
with a mean average temperature (cumulative highs and lows) of 28.4 degrees
in Lowville, a full 9.3 degrees above the normal mean average temperature
for February in Lowville of 19.1 degrees. In terms of ranking, it was the warmest
February on record, beating the previous record of highest mean average
temperature for February of 27.9 degrees set in 1925 by a half degree. The
coldest February on record occurred in 2015, when the mean average
temperature was just 3.6 degrees for the month. The highest temperature of
the month last month reached 62 degrees on February 28th. This was the
second warmest February temperature ever recorded for Lowville, with only
three February days ever reaching the 60 degree or above mark. The warmest
February day ever was February 22, 2018, when the temperature reached 66
degrees. The only other February day above 60 degrees occurred just last
year, on February 16, when the temperature reached 61 degrees. The lowest
temperature recorded last month was 1 degree on February 20th. This tied
for second place as the highest low temperature for the month of February,
trailing only 1927 when the lowest temperature recorded in February was 2
degrees.
February saw 0.81
inches of total precipitation in Lowville, well below the normal 2.59
inches for the month, ranking as the 8th driest February on record. The
wettest February on record occurred in 1954, with 5.75 inches of
precipitation recorded, while the driest February on record occurred in 1934,
with just 0.41 inches of precipitation. Measurable precipitation was
recorded on 8 days last month, with 3 additional days recording a trace
amount. The most precipitation recorded on a single day last month was 0.32
inches, recorded on February 29th. It is worth noting that overall,
February has the lowest average precipitation level of any month of the
year in Lowville.
Lowville saw a
total of 13.0 inches of new snow for the month of February (included in the
overall precipitation total), 16.6 inches below the normal 29.6 inches for
the month, making it the 22nd least snowy February on record. The snowiest February
on record occurred in 2006, with 57.3 inches of new snow recorded, while 1999
saw the least snowy February on record with just 4.3 inches of snow. There were 6 days with measurable snow
last month, with 2 additional days recording a trace amount. The most snow
recorded on a single day last month was 5.0 inches, recorded on both February
16th and 19th.
For the season to
date, Lowville has recorded 66.5 inches of snow (13 inches in November; 3
inches in December; 37.5 inches in January; 13 inches in February), well
below the mean average of 119.5 inches for the season, although there is
still time to make up some of the season deficit as any new snow through June
would be added to the season total. With ice coverage on Lake Ontario at an all-time record low for this point in the season, any
potential upcoming bursts of cold air crossing the lake could potentially result
in some late-season lake effect snow events that are normally diminished at
this point in the season when ice covers a large portion of the lake.
February also marked
the end of meteorological winter, which includes the months of December,
January, and February. All three months were in the top 10 warmest on
record, with December the second warmest on record, January the tenth
warmest on record, and the warmest February on record. The 29.2 degree mean
average temperature for the three-month period was the warmest on record, a
full 9.2 degrees above the normal mean average temperature for this time
frame of 20 degrees.
