First of Two Consecutive Maple Weekends Kicks Off Locally March 16 with Tree Tapping Ceremony Scheduled at Pierce’s Sugar Spigot

Lewis County, NY- March is Maple Month and that means the return of Maple Weekends at participating maple producers across New York State on March 16 & 17 and again March 23 & 24.

Maple Weekend, sponsored by the New York State Maple Producers’ Association,  is a chance for the public to come to the farm to learn about New York’s maple sugarmaking processes and traditions and to provide a chance to taste pure maple syrup in its many forms – right from the source, according to the event website.

To kick off Maple Weekends locally, the annual tree tapping ceremony in Lewis County with State and Local officials will be held this year at Pierce’s Sugar Spigot, 11608 State Route 812, Croghan, NY, on March 16 at 11 a.m. All are invited to attend.

According to information provided by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Lewis County (CCE Lewis), New York State ranks second in the nation for maple production, producing over 750,000 gallons of maple syrup in 2023 with more than 2,000 maple sugar makers in the state.

“This is a great time to support our local maple producers at the upcoming Maple Weekends,” said Michele Ledoux, Executive Director at CCE Lewis. “We encourage residents to visit the participating maple producers at their sugarhouses for tours, tastings, demonstrations and more.”

A list of participating maple producers in Lewis County is included below. A full list of producers participating across the state can be found on the Maple Weekend website.

Champion Peak Maple

33871 County Road 163, Copenhagen, NY 13626

Learn to make Maple Syrup the traditional way. Kids and kids at heart can learn the history of Maple Syrup and how it is made. Use the tools of our trade to learn to tap a tree, gather sap, watch your sap being boiled into syrup, and take a sample of the Maple Syrup you helped make home. Enjoy a cup of Maple coffee or Maple coco while watching us boil over the open front pan wood fired evaporator, the same way we have been doing for four generations. Our process is a little slower then some, but that allows us to take the time to answer any questions you may have about the way we do things or Maple Syrup in general.
