Investigate Fatal Roll-Over Crash in the town of Diana

PRESS RELEASE
On October 12,
2023, at 5:11 p.m., State Police responded to a reported overturned garbage
truck on State Route 3 in the town of Diana, Lewis County.
A 2004
International garbage truck, operated by Shawn R. Cummins, age
35 from Carthage, NY was traveling south on State Route 3 when he lost
control after rear right tire failure. The truck
crosses the northbound lane of travel, exits the roadway on the eastern
shoulder, and overturns on the driver’s side. Cummins was found
unconscious without a pulse and transported to Carthage Area Hospital where
he was pronounced deceased.
A 17-year-old
passenger, Ian J. Pierce from Natural Bridge, NY sustained
back injuries and was transported to Carthage Area Hospital for further
evaluation.
State Police were
assisted at the scene by Natural Bridge Fire and Ambulance, and Harrisville
Fire Department.
