Lowville Sees 4th Driest September on Record with Above Normal Temperatures

Lowville, NY- Overall, Lowville saw above average temperatures with precipitation well below normal last month, according to weather data compiled from the Northeast Regional Climate Center (dating back to 1893).

 

September finished with a mean average temperature (cumulative highs and lows) of 61.0 degrees in Lowville, a full 2.4 degrees above the normal mean average temperature for September in Lowville of 58.6 degrees. In terms of ranking, it was the 20th warmest September on record and the warmest since 2015 (63.5 degrees). The warmest September on record for Lowville occurred in 1961, when the mean average temperature for the month was 67.1 degrees. The coldest September occurred in 1918, when the mean average temperature was 51.9 degrees for the month. The highest temperature of the month last month reached 88 degrees on September 7th. The lowest temperature recorded last month was 37 degrees on both September 27th and 28th.

 

After three consecutive months of well above average precipitation, September saw a significant change to that trend- recording just 1.27 inches of precipitation. This was 2.22 inches below the average amount of precipitation for Lowville in September of 3.49 inches, making 2023 the 4th driest September on record. The driest September on record occurred in 1948, with just .21 inches of precipitation recorded, while the wettest September on record occurred in 1945, with 7.37 inches of precipitation. Measurable precipitation was recorded on just 5 days last month (tying the record for fewest days of measurable precipitation during September), with 3 additional days recording a trace amount. (For perspective, with over 130 years of weather data for Lowville- totaling 1,569 months, there have only been a total of 12 months with less than 5 days of precipitation during the month. March of 1910 saw 2 days with measurable precipitation, May of 1903 and June of 1910 had just three days with measurable precipitation, while March of 1912, July of 2002, August of 1909, 1918, 1924, 1940, and 1999, October of 1963, and November of 1904 each recorded 4 days of measurable precipitation.) The most precipitation recorded on a single day last month was .43 inches, recorded on September 8th.

 

So far this year Lowville has recorded a total of 30.28 inches of precipitation, slightly above the normal year-to-date total of 29.70 inches through September.
