Lewis County Jury Acquits Greig Man of All Charges in
Trial of Alleged Domestic Violence

Lowville, NY- A Greig man was acquitted
of all charges he was facing following a jury trial in Lewis County Court
last week, with the Honorable Daniel R. King presiding.
The trial of
James P. Marra III, 44, of Greig, began on
Monday, October 17, with the selection of the jury, consisting of nine
women and three men.
Mr. Marra, through a grand jury indictment, was facing two
felony counts and two misdemeanor counts relating to four separate
instances of alleged domestic violence between November of 2019 and June of
2021 as follows:
Count 1: Second-Degree Strangulation
(Class D Felony)
Count 1 alleged that on or about November
11, 2019, in the town of Greig, Mr. Marra, with
the intent to impede the normal breathing or circulation of blood of
another person, applied pressure to the neck of the alleged victim causing
physical injury or impairment.
Count 2: Second-Degree Assault (Class D
Felony):
Count 2 alleged that on or about May 30,
2020, in the town of Greig, Mr. Marra, with the
intent to cause physical injury to another person, caused such injury to
the alleged victim by means of a dangerous instrument, using the bathtub to
cause such injury.
Count 3: Third-Degree Assault (Class A
Misdemeanor):
Count 3 alleged that on or about April
19, 2021, in the town of Greig, Mr. Marra, with
intent to cause physical injury to another person, caused such injury to
the eye of the alleged victim.
Count 4: Third-Degree Assault (Class A
Misdemeanor):
Count 4 alleged that on or about June 23,
2021, in the town of Greig, Mr. Marra, with the
intent to cause injury, caused such injury to the alleged victim resulting
in a concussion and/or cervical strain.
Jurors heard opening
statements on Tuesday morning, from both Assistant Lewis County District
Attorney Caleb Petzoldt, prosecuting the case,
and defense attorney Jeff Tompkins with the Lewis County Conflict Defenders
Office.
The prosecution
presented witnesses and evidence on Tuesday, including testimony from the
alleged victim. The defense presented their case on Wednesday, with Mr. Marra taking the stand to testify in his defense.
Closing statements
took place on Wednesday afternoon, with the jury going into deliberation
late on Wednesday afternoon for about 20 minutes before being excused for
the day. Jurors returned and deliberated all day on Thursday, with no
verdict reached. After a full morning of deliberations on Friday, the jury
returned with their verdict early on Friday afternoon. The jury found Mr. Marra not guilty on all four of the counts he was
facing, concluding the trial.
