Author on the History of “Twas
the Night Before Christmas” Poem to Start National Book Tour at Constable Hall
on September 16
The Constable Hall Association is excited
to welcome Pamela McColl to Constable Hall.
McColl is a noted
expert on the beloved poem ’Twas the Night Before
Christmas and will be visiting the Hall on September 16, 2022. Pamela recently
completed a new book "Twas the Night: The
Art and History of the Classic Christmas Poem,", just in time for the
200th anniversary of the poem’s writing. This is one of the most published,
read, memorized, collected and loved poems in all
of Christmas literature.
The “’Twas the
Night Before Christmas” poem has a long history and connection with
Constable Hall. The mistress of the Hall, Mary Eliza McVickar
Constable (1789-1870), was a cousin of Clement C. Moore and family
tradition has always said the poem was given as a gift for her five young
children. In 1822, the year the poem was written, Mary Eliza was a young,
recently widowed mother facing the task of raising her family on her own,
in a rural part of upstate New York. Constable family tradition going back
to the 1800s says that Clement gave a copy of the poem as comfort to her.
The following link tells the story of this family tradition well. https://constablehall.org/discover/a-visit-from-st-nicholas/
We are fortunate
that Pamela has decided to start her nationwide book tour here in Lewis
County. This lavishly illustrated book will make a wonderful gift for the
upcoming holiday season. She will be available to the media for interviews
between 2:00-3:00pm and for book signings from 3:00-5:00 pm, in the Oneida
Room at Constable Hall. The author is also willing to engage in a
discussion of Christmas collectables during this time. The Hall will not be
open for tours. For more information about her book signing events visit www.twasthenightbook.com.
Come join us in
giving her a Constable Hall welcome as we explore the legend of ’Twas The Night Before Christmas.
