Lowville, NY- The Village of
Lowville recently updated the village code, adding language to the section pertaining
to sidewalks.
Section 161-12 of
the Code of the Village of Lowville has been amended to read as follows:
“It is the duty
of every property owner to maintain and repair that portion of any sidewalk
which is on or abuts their property. This shall include keeping such
sidewalks free of obstructions or hazards such as snow, ice, debris or
overhanging branches or encroaching vegetation. In addition, no vehicle
of any kind, including, but not limited to Automobiles, Trucks, Trailers,
Motor Homes, Motorcycles. Snowmobiles, and All-Terrain Vehicles, shall be
parked or stopped on any sidewalks within the Village of Lowville at any
time.”
The amended
portion (in bold) was added to address a number of
issues regarding the parking of vehicles on sidewalks in the village,
creating a hazard for pedestrians that need to walk into the street to get
around the obstructed portion of the sidewalk.
“In the past
there have been some issues with people parking on sidewalks with vehicles,
trucks, etc., thus blocking the sidewalk from pedestrians using it safely,”
Lowville Police Chief Randy Roggie said.
The new code is
now in effect, following its adoption by the Village Board of Trustees and
filing with New York State.
Chief Roggie said he wants to make sure the public is aware
of the amended code. His department will issue warnings over the next few
weeks, while educating violators on the safety issues involved with
obstructing sidewalks. After that, tickets will be issued for any
violations of the amended code.
