January Finishes Well Below Normal for Temperatures and Precipitation in Lowville

Lowville, NY- Following one of the warmest Decembers on record in Lowville, January turned out to be quite a different story, according to weather data from the Northeast Regional Climate Center dating back to 1893.

 

January finished with a mean average temperature (cumulative highs and lows) of 10.1 degrees in Lowville, making it the 11th coldest January on record and coldest January since 2004 (6.8 degrees). The normal mean average temperature for January in Lowville is 17.3 degrees, with January of 2022 finishing 7.2 degrees below the normal average. By comparison, December was the 8th warmest on record in Lowville, finishing 5.7 degrees above the normal average.

 

The high temperature for January 2022 of 46 degrees was reached on January 2nd and the low temperature for the month of -23 degrees was reached on January 21st and 22nd. There were 20 days where a temperature below zero was recorded, tying it for 2nd place all-time for most January days with a below zero temperature. Only 1994 had more below zero days in January, when 22 were recorded.

 

January saw a total of 1.81 inches of precipitation, well below the normal of 3.47 inches for the month. This ranks as the 19th driest January on record. Measurable precipitation was recorded on 14 days, with four additional days recording a trace amount. Precipitation totals include 25 inches of new snow recorded, compared to the normal average of 35.6 inches of new snow in January. The snowiest January on record, with 84.6 inches of new snow recorded, was 1997. The day with the most new snow last month, with 6 inches recorded, was January 17th.
