JCC Esports Team Sanctioned
by NJCAA to Commence Fall 2022
Esports is
quickly gaining popularity in higher education and Jefferson Community
College (JCC) is proud to announce plans for the launch of its inaugural
esports team, a sanction of the National College Athletic Association
Esports (NJCAAE). Beginning in August 2022, JCC students will have the
exciting opportunity to brandish their gaming skills while earning college
credit for participating in a collegiate sport. The esports program will
become the 12th sport for Cannoneer Athletics at Jefferson Community
College.
JCC’s esports
lab, currently under renovation on the top floor of Jules Center (Building
6), will be equipped with computers, monitors, gaming chairs and
televisions that offer a quality student gaming experience. JCC’s esports
team will face off against NJCAAE teams across the United States and teams
from neighboring colleges and universities. Students will compete in an
organized, multiplayer video game while spectators watch from the esports
lab on campus and virtually. JCC hopes to field teams in various games
including Fortnite, NBA2K, Call of Duty, FIFA21, Hearthstone, Madden21,
Overwatch, Rainbow6, Rocket League, Valorant and
Super Smash Bros: Ultimate, just to name a few. Details are still being
finalized. Visit www.cannoneerathletics.com for updates.
To join JCC’s
inaugural esports team, students must be attending JCC full-time and be
enrolled in a degree program. Teams will be governed by a part-time coach.
In addition to esports, JCC also offers men/women’s basketball, men/women’s
soccer, men/women’s cross country, men/women’s golf, volleyball, baseball and softball.
