Lowville, NY- Contractors from across the region gathered in the Lewis County Board of Legislators’ chambers this afternoon for the opening of bids for Lewis County’s large-scale facilities improvement project planned for this year, at an initially estimated cost of approximately $19.3 million.

The project, which calls for a complete renovation of the Department of Social Services building on Stowe Street and the construction of a new Highway Garage on the East Road, is broken into the following five contract categories that went out to bid in January: General Construction, Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical and Fire Protection. Bids were due back by February 10, with the bid opening taking place this afternoon.

The main scope of the project, as presented to bidders, includes:

1. Renovation to the Department of Social Services Building.

2. New Maintenance Shop (at the DSS site).

3. Renovations of the existing Highway Garage.

4. Replace the Cold Storage Building with a New Building.

5. New Highway –Main Garage.

6. New Vehicle Wash Building.

Multiple bids were received in four of the five contract categories, with only one firm providing a bid for the Fire Protection contract. The bids will now be reviewed by the County’s consultants, and the Lewis County Board of Legislators will hold a special meeting on Thursday, February 24, at 5 p.m., where contracts for the project are anticipated to be awarded.

After announcing bid amounts for each of the five contracts, county officials were pleased with both the number of bids received and the competitive nature of the bids. If the low bids for each contract are accepted, the price of the project will come in at just over $15 million, under the budgeted cost of $19.3 million.

“This is good news,” County Manager Ryan Piche said following the opening of bids. “This project received very competitive bids and assuming everything is in line we should be able to award the contracts during our special meeting on February 24.”

An announcement is also expected on where services and employees at the Department of Social Services building will be housed during the duration of the renovation project.
