Lowville, NY- The family of a second grade student at Lowville Academy & Central School (LACS) are upset that a Christmas tree project submitted by the student will not be displayed with others at the school. The second grade project was to take home a Christmas tree poster to decorate with family, to be returned for display at the school. The family, who live outside the village in the country, are avid outdoors enthusiasts. They enjoy hunting, fishing, trapping, target shooting, and many other outdoor activities. The student worked very hard and was proud to include the things that reflected his family on his tree, the student's father, Jeremiah Ward, told linkinglewiscounty.com. Mr. Ward said he received a call on December 8th from the elementary school principal at LACS, and was told his son's project would not be able to be displayed with others in his class. Mr. Ward met with the principal the following day, where he picked up the project and brought it home. He said he was told the reason for the project being unacceptable for display was because it included handguns and other weapons. We contacted the school district about the project, and Superintendent Cheryl Steckly provided us with the following statement. "The District applauds the effort made by the student in completing the project in question. The second grade assignment was to take a tree home and decorate it as a family project to be returned and displayed in the school hallways. When the student returned to school with the project, the tree was adorned with pictures which included rifles and handguns. In light of recent events, we took a proactive stance and contacted the family to offer the opportunity to modify the project so that it could be on display in school," Ms, Steckly told us. A series of high profile shooting incidents had recently taken place, with the attack in San Bernardino, CA, occurring on December 2nd. Mr. Ward feels that the district overreacted and the project should have been allowed to be displayed as submitted. He opted to take the project home to display instead of having the project modified. "When my father was in school at Lowville, they had a rife shooting team. When I was in school at Lowville, we had an archery league. Now my son can not put paper cutouts of hunting weapons on a poster?" Mr. Ward said. "I feel this is pretty sad, as an avid outdoorsman and father. I'm sorry, but is this what our school systems have come to?" he asked. A previous project submitted by the student was made from casings of .22 caliber used ammunition shells, and was allowed to be displayed, prompting the father to question what policies the decisions are based on.
