Lowville- The Lewis County Board of Legislators approved resolution number
308-2015 at their monthly meeting on Tuesday evening, raising the premium of
health insurance for county employees up to 15% effective retroactive to October
1st. The resolution passed by a vote of 10-0. Premiums are expected to increase
to $625.35/month for individuals and $1,649.95 for families. The employee
contribution for most county employees is 24%, with hospital employees paying
23% and Sheriff's Department road patrols paying 22%. The county and/or
hospital are responsible for the remainder of the premium.

The self-funded county insurance plan was running low on cash reserves, with
claims exceeding contributions since about August of 2015. The increase in
premium not only affects employees, but is expected to add about $460,000 to
the county's 2016 budget.  Officials will try to work with employee unions to see
what changes can be implemented to the plan to keep it fiscally sound for the
    future.
