Senate includes the phasing in of a minimum wage increase over the coming years. In a compromise between the Republicans in the State Senate and Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, the minimum wage in upstate New York will be increased to $12.50/hour by the end of 2020. In New York City the wage will increase to $15/hour by the end of 2018. The upstate increase, which includes Lewis County, calls for an increase to $9.70/hour at the end of 2016 and then a 70 cent increase at the end of each year until the $12.50/hour rate is achieved at the end of 2020. Future increases will then be tied to inflation after that point until the rate hits $15/hour statewide. The governor's budget director can suspend any wage hikes after 2018 if there's evidence that New York's economy is being negatively impacted.
