Large Grass Fire in Lyonsdale Burns Approximately 80-100 Acres

Town of Lyonsdale

Emergency and fire crews were called to a reported

grass fire on the River Road in the Town of Lyonsdale shortly after 5:30 on

Sunday evening.

The fire, which

s thought to

have

originate

below the large power

transmission

lines by static electricity, quickly spread into a nearby wooded

area

Crews

from multiple departments

spent much of Sunday evening battling the

blaze in difficult terrain

before

containing the fire

for the most part

around 9:30

Sunday night.

Port

Leyden Auxiliary was on scene to provide refreshments to

crews. New York

State DEC Rangers also were at the scene to provide

assistance

, as well as Lewis County Search and Rescue

Crews

returned to the scene

Monday

injuries were reported, according to Mr. MacKenzie, and no structures were

damaged. Two National Grid poles were damaged

and will be replaced.

Approximately 100 firefighters

from

Port Leyden, Lyons Falls, Boonville,

Constableville, Western and

Martinsburg

were involved in the

efforts

over the

two day

period.

"It was an outstanding effort by all departments in very difficult terrain with near

vertical slopes and heavy winds," Mr. Mackenzie said.
