Central School on Friday, April 15, at 7 PM, to share his story. The event is free to attend, although donations will be collected to help offset the cost of the program. According to a release on the Adirondack Mennonite Heritage Farm website, as a teenager, Mr. Hirt and his family were foraging for food during World War II in Belgrade, Yugoslavia (Serbia today), when he was captured by the Nazis in 1941. He was loaded into a cattle car and became a prisoner at the most notorious concentration camp in Auschwitz. His faith in God gave him strength to survive each day. After eight months, Joseph made a daring escape in the bitter cold night. The atrocities he witnessed and experienced at the camp are forever in his memory. He shares his story so that the listeners will never forget the Holocaust. A short video will also be shown. He is writing his life story and expects to have the book available for sale at the April 15 event. John Ruth, Mennonite author and historian, will also be sharing in the program. The program is being sponsored by the Adirondack Mennonite Heritage Association, with a grant from the Pratt Northam Foundation and a donation by the Foy Agency. |
