The impact in Lewis County was not nearly as severe as it was for some counties, thanks in part to the conservative amount budgeted in the county's 2015 budget. According to a report issued by the New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli's office, sales tax collections in 30 of the 57 counties excluding New York City were less in 2015 than in 2014. The steady decline of fuel prices throughout 2015 is likely a key contributor to the decline in sales tax revenue for many counties. In 2014, Lewis County collected $11,824,281 in sales tax. This amount decreased by 1.8% in 2015 to $11,607,853. The amount budgeted for sales tax revenue in the 2015 budget was $10,483,500, which actually left the county with a $1,124,353 surplus in terms of actual amount collected versus the amount budgeted. Other counties in the area saw declines as well. Jefferson County saw a 3.5% decline in sales tax collected from 2014 to 2015, while Oneida County saw a 1.6% dip.
