Winter Sports and
Events Update
Our school has
proven that we have been able to successfully implement health and safety
protocols to provide opportunities to students and to student athletes
throughout the entire pandemic. In our document, 2021-2022 Winter Athletics Information, provided at the
beginning of the season, the District committed to
reevaluating our process every two weeks in response to local data and
other information from the state.
In a press
release from Governor Hochul over the weekend,
the state was informed that the mandatory mask mandate will be in effect
beginning on Monday, December 13, 2021.( https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-hochul-announces-major-action-address-winter-surge-and-prevent-business-disruption) As a school district, this has always
been the case and this mandate has little to no impact on us. However,
Governor Hochul made no mention about a
requirement to reduce large-group gatherings. Additionally, after our
county declared a state of emergency last week, they also made no mention
of reducing large group gatherings.( https://linkinglewiscounty.com/002112/Lewis-County-Legislators-Approve-COVID-19-State-of-Emergency-Declaration-Joining-Other-Counties-in-North-Country-Region.html )
Lewis County
continues to have one of the highest positivity rates while having one of
the lowest vaccination rates in the state. However, people who want the
vaccination have had access to it for well over a
year. And now, with the availability for children ages 5 to 11, the vast majority of children we are trying to protect,
have the opportunity for greater protection. The pandemic has become a
pandemic of risk based on choice. Moving forward with knowledge and wisdom
is important.
With all of these points, we will open our events to anyone who
wishes to attend beginning on Monday, December 20th, 2021.
We will also open the events this week (December 13th) to any
immediate family members of the student and any
faculty or staff member. Masks are a requirement
at all times. You must wear
your mask over your nose.
Just like the
state, we will reevaluate our decision on January 15th and make
any necessary changes that we consider in the best interest of the students
of Lowville Academy and Central School District.
