STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ANNOUNCES
COMPLETION OF $2.2 MILLION BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT ON STATE ROUTE 126 IN
LEWIS COUNTY
New Span Over Swiss Creek Enhances Safety and
Resiliency
New York State
Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez today
announced the completion of a $2.2 million project that replaced the bridge
carrying State Route 126 over Swiss Creek in the Town of Croghan, Lewis
County. The project replaced an aging, 50-year-old twin corrugated metal
culvert structure with a modern, precast concrete arch that will enhance
safety and mobility along an important connector for the flow of people and
goods in Lewis County. The new bridge’s wider opening will allow improved
water flow to reduce instances of flooding and provide greater resilience
against severe weather events. An adjacent culvert was also repaired to
extend its service life and further improve the road’s resilience.
“This new bridge
over the Swiss Creek will enhance the reliability and resiliency of this
important link serving the rural communities of Lewis County and help
ensure that that the region’s many important products, everything from milk
to maple syrup, can get where they need to go safely and with a minimum of
delays,” Commissioner Dominguez said. “Projects like this
underscore the important role infrastructure plays in growing our economy
and strengthening our communities.”
State Route 126
serves the farming communities of Lewis County and provides access to the
Adirondack Mountains. Construction of the new bridge began in March of
2021.The project was located between the Village of Carthage and the hamlet
Beaver Falls in the Town of Croghan.
State Senator
Joseph Griffo said, "I am
pleased that the State Route 126 Bridge replacement project in Croghan is
completed. This project will improve accessibility, enhance safety and
reduce the risk for flooding in the area."
Assemblymember
Ken Blankenbush said, “Thank you to the
Department of Transportation for completing the bridge replacement project
on State Route 126 in Lewis County. Much of our North Country
infrastructure is aging and I will continue to support well thought-out
modernization projects. The new bridge will improve both the movement of
people and water flow with its new widened opening.”
Motorists are
urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones. Fines are doubled
for speeding in a work zone. Convictions of two or more speeding
violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s
driver license.
