Lowville, NY- Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the Lowville Walmart store, 7155 E. State St., on Thursday afternoon, after what is now described as a false call placed to the Lewis County 911 center.

The incident started just before 3:30 on Thursday afternoon.

Lewis County Sheriff Mike Carpinelli tells linkinglewiscounty.com that a 911 call received by Lewis County dispatchers resulted in multiple law enforcement agencies being dispatched to the Walmart store for a reported incident. The Sheriff said it has been determined that the incident was a false call and describes it as a “swatting” incident, defined as “an action or practice of making a prank call to emergency services in an attempt to bring about the dispatch of a large number of armed police officers to a particular address.”

The Sheriff declined to describe the nature of the call that initiated the response or provide any additional information.

Responding agencies included the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, the New York State Police, the Lowville Police Department and a NYS DEC Officer in the area.

We’ve reached out to the New York State Police for additional information and will update this story if anything additional is provided.
