Local Student Elected to Serve FFA Members in District 6
Lowville, NY: May 15, 2021 may very well stand out as a day to be remembered
for a local high school student. Taylor Stalker, a student at Lowville
Academy and Central School. A member of the Lowville FFA Chapter, Taylor
was elected to serve for a year as a District FFA President.
The FFA, the
largest youth organization in the US, once known as the Future Farmers of America,
offers leadership and career development opportunities for students
interested in any agriculturally related careers. One in five American
careers is founded in agriculture and students studying agricultural
education in New York high schools are preparing for careers that are
essential (food safety), current (“Green” technology and renewable fuels)
and lucrative (veterinary science). As an elected District President,
Taylor will have the chance to promote these opportunities throughout their
district to students, school administrators, businesses, and legislators.
As an FFA member,
Taylor took advantage of many of these same opportunities. The leadership
skills developed throughout membership in the FFA lead to a talent for speaking,
knowledge of agriculture and a passion for servant leadership. As a
District President, Taylor will receive over 50 hours of training and spend
the next 12 months traveling
not only to every
corner of the district, but state-wide engaging with FFA members and supporters.
Appropriately, going along with the convention theme “Be The
Link”, Taylor will have the opportunity to link FFA members within their
district throughout their year of service. She will be visiting local
schools, facilitating workshops and giving
speeches to groups interested in agriculture and education.
“Taylor will be a
great asset to the members of Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence Counties as
she represents them on the state level. She has the experience and
dedication to fill this important role. Taylor will not only represent
these students well, but will also gain more leadership skills, only
available to those students who decide to serve on the next level,” said Melvin
Phelps, Lowville FFA Chapter Advisor.
Unlike any other
year, Taylor began her year of service with Virtual Base Camp training the
week of May 24th. Time-management, engaging others, key message
identification, and character-driven decision making will all be explored
in depth throughout the four-day training all while finishing up the school
year. It’s a whirlwind experience but one that
will be well worth the challenge. After all, as any FFA member knows, being
elected a District President is a great
opportunity to
grow as a leader. FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students
by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and
career success through agriculture education. For more information
