Public Hearing Taking Place April 7th on Village of Lowville's
Tentative Budget Proposed to Exceed State Property Tax Cap

Lowville, NY-  The Village of Lowville Board of Trustees will hold a special
meeting on April 7th at 4 p.m. to conduct their 2021-2022 organizational
meeting and hold a public hearing for the 2021-22 Tentative Budget, in
addition to any other business that comes before the Board.

The proposed tentative budget increases spending by $53,700 over last
year, taking total appropriations from $2,176,270 last year to $2,229,970 in
    this year's tentative plan.

The amount to be collected through taxes (tax levy) increases by $66,372 (4
percent), from $1,653,936 last year to $1,720,308 in this year's proposed
plan. This exceeds the property tax cap limit imposed by New York State.
Although the amount to be collected through taxes is proposed to go up, the
actual tax rate will drop from $9.608973/$1,000 of assessed value last year
to $9.464838 this year, a decrease of 1.5 percent. Village officials say this is
mainly due to the reassessment of property values in the village last year,
which saw many property assessments  increase. So, for example, if you
own a home in the village valued at $100,000 last year, but your home was
reassessed to $110,000, your village tax bill last year would have been
$961 while this year's bill would be $1,042. Even though the tax rate
dropped, for many homeowners the total amount owed may increase. Most
taxpayers would have already seen the impact of the reassessments on
their most recent school tax or county and town property tax bills.
