16-Week Internship Starts in May
The
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), in
partnership with the Student Conservation Association (SCA), is seeking to
recruit a Natural Resource Steward to serve on public lands in the Old
Forge area during the 2021 field season. This SCA internship will
start in late May and last through the summer; the end date will be
determined by the student’s scheduled return to school. The individual in
this position will perform a variety of duties that support the
preservation, protection, and enhancement of the area’s natural resources,
as well as the safety and well-being of the general
public using these resources.
These
duties may include, but are not limited to:
· Engaging the public in promoting
Leave-No-Trace™ principles and general hiking safety;
· Inspecting trails, camping
areas, and other facilities to document maintenance needs; and
· Assisting DEC staff and other
partners in working on larger bridge projects and other trail-related work.
Eligible
interns are 18 years of age or older with a valid driver’s license.
The ability to use a map and compass, GPS unit, and strong backpacking and
general outdoor skills are essential. This position requires the
willingness and ability to hike and work alone or in small groups in
oftentimes remote, rugged terrain and inclement weather conditions.
Camping in the backcountry may also be required.
