Fatal Fire at Willow Landing Apartment Complex in Lowville

    Lowville, NY- Fire crews were dispatched just before 3:30 this afternoon to a
    structure fire at the Willow Landing apartment complex on Hemlock Drive in the
    village of Lowville.

    The call was first reported as a Lifenet call for an unknown problem. An
    ambulance and patrol were initially dispatched to the scene. A Lowville Police
    patrol was the first to arrive on scene, according to the officer, and reported
    heavy black smoke coming from the lower apartment unit. He requested fire to
    respond and tried to gain entry into the apartment but the smoke was too thick.
    He was able to evacuate the other three units in the building with the assistance
    of a Sheriff's Office deputy.

    Lowville, Castorland, Martinsburg and New Bremen Fire all responded to the
    scene. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze quickly. Lewis County Search
    and Rescue responded with two ambulances. An air medical helicopter was
    initially requested, but later canceled.

    Investigators are currently on scene.

    One fatality was reported at the scene. Lowville Police have identified the victim
    as Thomas C. Young of Lowville.
