Lowville, NY- Members of the St. Peter's Church Youth Ministry delivered
donations for the 'Homeless Christmas Tree' initiative this afternoon, to the
Lewis County Chamber of Commerce in Lowville.

The youth purchased items during a group trip to Walmart to create individual
    packages for the initiative.

"Your gift is going to help out a lot of people," Penny Demo, Lewis County
Youth Bureau Director, told the group.

The 'Homeless Christmas Tree' initiative is organized by the Youth Bureau in
partnership with the Lewis County Department of Social Services. The annual
initiative collects items to be used for the 'Homeless Bins' project, which are
given to families and individuals that need to start over. The bins contain
personal hygiene, kitchen and bathroom supplies, as well as other essentials.
So far in 2016, donations received through the 2015 initiative have been used
to issue 37 bins, in addition to helping approximately 170 economically
    vulnerable families and individuals.

The St. Peter's Youth Ministry group donated individual bags containing
hygiene items, socks, combs, toothpaste, snacks and other various supplies.

"Making the world a better place starts in your own community," said Youth
Ministry member Lydia Beyer, when asked what inspired the group to become
    involved with the project.

"It's fun to get out there with your friends while being able to help people out,"
added Youth Ministry member Keegan Poste.

The group has assembled food bags and helped out with the annual Lewis
County Christmas Sharing program, as well as sending Christmas cards to
residents at residential care facilities in Boonville and Lowville. They intend to
become involved annually with the 'Homeless Christmas Tree' initiative. The
group hopes the individuals receiving the bins can feel a sense of relief when
starting over, while knowing that there are people out there who care.

The 'Homeless Christmas Tree' is located at the Lewis County Chamber of
Commerce office, on S. State Street in Lowville. You can drop off donations
through Friday, December 23. Below is a list of items needed.
