our local community. The heroin problem in our area has reached a crisis point, in our opinion. When a small community the size of ours can lose multiple people in the period of a few days- with even more hospitalized, we definitely have a serious problem on our hands. The point here isn't to address the specifics of the individual cases or any criminal investigations which are ongoing, but to bring awareness and offer some resources for combating the problem. It's time to stand together as a community and take back our towns and villages from the drugs which are destroying them. Addiction is such an ugly disease, and the choices people make while addicted may not make sense to a lot of people. In many cases an underlying issue may lead someone down the road to heroin and other dangerous drugs. Heroin can kill you the very first time you use it, it's that dangerous. If a bad batch happens to get onto the streets, many can die in a short period of time. This isn't meant to cause panic, but to make everyone aware of how deadly the problem has become in our area. We understand that someone has to want help in order to effectively help them. There are many resources in the area that can help you get started. Educate yourselves and your family on the dangers of heroin and other drugs. Know the signs you can look for. It can happen to anybody. If you suspect someone you know or love needs help, do everything in your power to be there for them and assist in finding the help they need. With the rural area we live in there are limited activities and venues for our youth to keep busy. Community outreach is crucial here. Let's do more to provide our youth with constructive activities to participate in. We hope that this week has been an eye-opener for everyone in the community, and together we can find solutions to bringing this problem under control. NYS Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services: Combat Addiction UPDATE: We apologize, the Lewis County Recovery Center information we provided came from a website and is no longer accurate. The Credo Community Center in Lewis County now provides the services and is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 am - 5 pm and Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am - 6pm. They currently provide open intake evaluations on Mondays from 8-10am and on Wednesdays from 1-3pm. They do provide group and individual sessions and are also licensed by OASAS. Their clinic in Watertown is now offering a methadone clinic as well that they can refer people to. The center is located at Mountain View Preventive Services, 7714 Number Three Rd, Lowville NY,or you can call them at (315) 376-5958. Northern Regional Center for Independent Living (NRCIL), located at 7632 North State St. in Lowville, provides peers, recovery coaches, advocacy, support groups and much more.
