Lowville, NY- The Lewis County Board of Legislators adopted the 2017
budget at a special meeting held Tuesday evening, by a vote of 9-0, with
Legislator Lawrence Dolhof excused from the meeting.

The meeting opened with a public hearing regarding the budget. The only
public comments came from Mary Hunyadi, representing the county's libraries,
asking the board to provide the requested funding for the library system, while
explaining the importance the libraries have in their communities.

The $44.9 million general fund spending plan includes a tax levy amount of
$15,338,189, which is the amount to be collected through taxes. This is an
increase of $215,357 over the amount collected last year, but because of a
taxable value increase in property values, the full-value tax rate would
decrease by 21 cents per $1,000 of assessed value. The adopted 2017 rate
would be $7.23 per $1,000 of assessed value compared to $7.44 last year.
This means a home assessed at $100,000 would see their county taxes drop
from $744 last year to $723 this year.
