    Lowville, NY- Many things come to mind when you think about the month of
    October. Of course there is Halloween, apples, leaf peeping, the start of
    hunting season, breast cancer awareness and much more. The Victim Services
    Department at Lewis County Opportunities, Inc., would like you to remember
    that October is also Domestic Violence Awareness month.

    Purple ribbons and displays around the county are meant to serve as a
    reminder to the issue of domestic violence that affects the lives of so many
    people each year. The Victim Services Department has provided purple
    ribbons for the vehicles of local law enforcement agencies in their efforts to
    raise awareness to the issue. Ribbons were given to the Lowville Police
    Department, the Lewis County Sheriff's Office and the New York State Police
    barracks in Lowville. The month will conclude with a free showing of the movie
    "Safe Haven", on October 26th beginning at 7 PM, at the Town Hall Theater in
    Lowville.

    In 2015 the Victim Services Program served 138 victims of Domestic Violence
    in Lewis County, and there were 127 bed nights at the Safe Dwelling house
    that Domestic Violence Victims stay in. If you or someone you know are victims
    of domestic violence, help is available. You can contact an advocate at the
    Victim Services Program at Opportunities at (315)376-8202 ext 4 or you can
    reach the hotline at (315)376-HELP (4357).
Lewis County Undersheriff Jim Monnat (L), along with Mary Interiano, Jason McAvoy and
Katie Zehr, from the Victim Services Department at Lewis County Opportunities, Inc.,
placing purple ribbons on the Sheriff's Office vehicles on Tuesday, to help raise
awareness to domestic violence issues.
