Statement from US Congresswoman Elise Stefanik:

New York State Drought Information

Friends, the State of New York has been experiencing unprecedented drought

and heatwave conditions that have affected farmers across the North Country.

Agriculture is the backbone of our district and any substantial damage done to

our North Country farms has a direct impact on our economy.

I am committed to helping our farmers in any way that I can. My office has been

in constant contact with local farmers throughout our district, the U.S.

Department of Agriculture (USDA), the regional Farm Service Agency, the

Jefferson County Local Development Corporation, and the Cornell Cooperative

Extension.

We have also been in contact with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric

Administration (NOAA), the Northeast Regional Climate Center, and the

National Drought Mitigation Center about data that is being used to determine

drought zones.

Together, we are working to push for a D3 Drought Designation for our region

so that farmers have increased access to much needed support from the

USDA. I have written two letters to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack, asking him to

re-review data associated with our district and to expedite a Jefferson County

D3 Drought Declaration.
