Lowville, NY- Despite the economic challenges posed by the ongoing COVID-
19 pandemic, Lewis County is one of just 11 counties in New York State
currently showing an increase in sales tax revenue compared to the same period
    last year.

A report released by the state Comptroller's Office shows that in the period of
    January 1, 2019 to July 31, 2019 Lewis County collected approximately $7.0
million in sales tax revenue, while during the same period in 2020 the county has
collected approximately $7.1 million. This equates to a 1.2 percent increase in
sales tax revenue so far this year.

One notable change from last year is the addition of sales tax collected on
internet purchases from retailers and vendors located outside of the state that
    started in 2020.

Statewide, total sales tax collections are down 11.3 percent year over year, with
the state collecting $10.2 billion in the first 7 months of 2019 compared to the
$9.0 billion collected through July of this year.

In the North Country region, which the report includes as Clinton, Essex,
Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis and St, Lawrence counties, overall sales tax revenue
is down 2.5 percent compared to last year. During the January 1, 2019 to July
31, 2019 period the region collected $147.4 million in sales tax, while collecting
$143.7 million during the same period this year. Lewis County is the only county
in the region to see an increase in sales tax revenue, although St. Lawrence
County remains even with last year's collections.

Lewis County budgeted for the collection of $11.5 million in sales tax revenue in
the 2019 budget year. By year end the county had collected $12.9 million in
sales tax revenue. The budgeted amount for sales tax revenue in the county's
    2020 budget is $11.8 million.
