North Country Not Among the Three Regions
of State Ready to Begin Reopening on May 15

May 11, 2020   01:00 p.m.   Updated: May 12, 2020   03:30 p.m.
Governor Andrew Cuomo was in Irondequoit, NY this morning, near Rochester,
for his daily press briefing where he announced as of today, three regions of the
state have met the criteria to begin Phase I of reopening on May 15.

The North Country region, which includes Lewis, Jefferson, St. Lawrence,
Franklin, Clinton, Essex and Hamilton counties, currently falls just short in one of
the seven criteria established by the state to begin the reopening process. The
region does not meet the testing capacity standard of 30 tests per 1,000
residents per month, due to a lack in the availability of testing supplies.

Three regions of the state, the Finger Lakes, Southern Tier and Mohawk Valley,
have met all of the criteria to begin a Phase I reopening on May 15.

Governor Cuomo also announced that the following low-risk business and
recreational activities will reopen statewide on May 15:
  • Landscaping and gardening
  • Outdoor, low-risk recreational activities (i.e. tennis)
  • Drive-in movie theaters
