Lowville American Legion this afternoon, launching the 'Cookies for Soldiers' campaign. Lowville American Legion Post Commander Lee Hinkleman started the new project this year. Members of the public can purchase boxes of the cookies at the Lowville Legion on Dayan Street for $5 each (the same price charged by the Girl Scouts), add a message to the box and donate it to the Cookies for Soldiers program. The Lowville American Legion Post will then ship the cookies to their adopted unit, Task Force Phoenix of the 10th Mountain Combat Aviation Brigade (3-10 GSAB), currently deployed to a mission in Afghanistan. The adopted unit helps out the Lowville community in many ways, including volunteering for various projects in the village of Lowville such as hanging the flags along the streets, volunteering at the food pantry, historical society and Cream Cheese Festival, and assisting with projects at the Legion. Community members are also welcome to bring Girl Scout cookies purchased elsewhere to donate to the campaign. The first 100 boxes were delivered to the Legion today by two members of Lowville Girl Scout Troop 50275, Alexis Allen and Shelby Gentry. The Legion plans to sell cookies and accept donations through the month of March, making a series of shipments to the deployed unit.
