Grand Jury Indicts Croghan Man on
Predatory Sexual Assault of a Child Charge

January 15, 2020   10:00 a.m.   By: Nick Altmire
Croghan, NY- A Lewis County grand jury handed up a one-count indictment
against a Croghan man on Wednesday for a charge of first-degree Predatory
Sexual Assault of a Child, a class A-II felony.

Alexander E. Jordan, 23, was arraigned on the charge in Lewis County Court
by Judge Daniel R. King, entering a plea of not guilty.

According to court documents, Mr. Jordan is accused of sexually abusing a child
under the age of 13 between November, 2017 and December, 2019, in the town
    of Croghan.

Mr. Jordan was currently being held at the Lewis County Jail after being picked
up by State Police on a fugitive from justice warrant on December 17.

A discussion was held on bail, with the crime being one of the few offenses that
allows for a bail hold under the State's new bail reform law. Judge King stated
that the court must release the subject on his own recognizance unless the court
could establish a risk of flight. Judge King ultimately remanded Mr. Jordan to the
Lewis County Jail without bail, citing the fact that being a fugitive from justice
from Indiana raises concerns that he could be a flight risk and fail to appear on
    this charge.

Mr. Jordan has an additional matter pending in the grand jury as well.

He is next scheduled to appear in court on January 24.

According to New York State Penal Law:

Predatory sexual assault against a child is charged when, being eighteen years
old or more, he or she commits the crime of rape in the first degree, criminal
sexual act in the  first  degree,  aggravated sexual  abuse in the first degree, or
course of sexual conduct against a child in the first degree, as defined in this
chapter, and the victim is less than thirteen years old.
