County Planning Board Approves Site Plan Review and Special Use
Permit for Proposed Bar in Downtown Lowville's  Bateman Building

December 19, 2019   09:15 p.m.   By: Nick Altmire
Lowville, NY- The Lewis County Planning Board this afternoon approved the
Site Plan Review and Special Use Permit for the proposed Bateman Draft
House, sending the plan back to the Lowville Planning Board for final approval.

The plan proposes opening a bar in an area of the Bateman Building, owned by
Conifer Bateman Associates and located at 7574 South State Street, that has
previously served as a bar and restaurant.

The building is identified as a commercial property in an area zoned as a Village
Center, with the proposed use deemed consistent with the character of the
downtown corridor. The application noted that there are three existing
establishments that serve alcohol within 300 feet of the proposed location, which
itself was originally a bar and restaurant.

According to the narrative provided in the application by the business owner
Meghann Hellinger, "The Bateman Draft House will be a fine drinking
establishment, focused primarily on craft beers, high-quality wines and ciders
    from across New York State."

Although there was not a desired opening date listed in the application, initial
hours of operation were proposed as Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from
    5 p.m. to 12 a.m. and Sundays from 12 to 5 p.m.

The Lowville Planning Board next meets on January 22, when a final decision on
the proposed project could be made.
