| All But Three Lewis County Towns Opt In to Installment Payment Plan Option for County and Town Property Taxes October 10, 2019 04:30 p.m. By: Nick Altmire |
an installment payment option for taxpayers on their County and Town property taxes. The Lewis County Board of Legislators adopted a local law in July that authorized the installment plan option for property taxes. Towns that were interested in participating had until October 1 to pass a resolution authorizing the change at the town level for 2020 tax bills. Of the 17 towns in the county, Diana, Montague and Pinckney were the only three that will NOT be accepting installment payments in January. They can still choose to opt in for future years, as long as they pass a resolution prior to October 1 of an upcoming tax year. For residents in the remaining 14 towns (Croghan, Denmark, Greig, Harrisburg, Lewis, Leyden, Lowville, Lyonsdale, Martinsburg, New Bremen, Osceola, Turin, Watson, West Turin), starting with the property tax bill due on January 31, 2020, residents will have a choice to break their tax bill into two installments for the first time. Half of the amount would be due by January 31, with the remaining half due by May 31. As long as both payments are made on time there would not be any interest or penalty added, although their is a 2% service fee due with the first payment if you choose to pay in installments. In addition to allowing installments, most of those 14 towns will also have an option for paying your property tax bill online for the first time. There will be a 2.85% processing fee if you pay by credit card online, or a $2.95 fee to pay by check online.
