afternoon, in honor of a fallen turnkey (now known as correction officers) at the jail. On August 17, 1958, Turnkey Patrick J. Fogarty was the only officer on duty at the jail in Lowville when he was beaten by three inmates escaping from the jail. Turnkey Fogarty, who was 77 at the time, died as a result of his injuries. He had served at the Lewis County Sheriff's Office for 17 years. The three inmates were later apprehended and charged in connection with the escape and Turnkey Fogarty's death. This afternoon, Sheriff Michael Carpinelli unveiled a memorial to Turnkey Patrick J. Fogarty, at the outside entrance to the Public Safety Building on Outer Stowe Street, during a brief dedication ceremony with members of the Fogarty family. A memorial rock with an affixed plaque will serve as a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by Turnkey Fogarty, Sheriff Carpinelli told the family members. Turnkey Fogarty's niece Elizabeth Fogarty and great-niece Patricia Fogarty Murphy were on hand for the ceremony. Full video from the ceremony is included below. |
