Raises Over $16,000 for Local Youth in Agriculture

Lowville, NY- The Lewis County Dairy Industry Building Committee hosted the
25th Annual Cheese Auction on Tuesday morning at the Lewis County Fair,
raising over $16,000 for local youth in agriculture.

Lowville Producers Dairy Co-op donated 165 pounds of cheddar cheese, in
addition to over 100 pounds of specialty cheeses. A total of 35 blocks were
auctioned off in sizes from 5 to 20 pounds.

The "Big Cheese", a 20 pound block of cheddar (pictured above), brought the
largest bid- $4,100 from Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush and the Lewis County
Republican Committee. Kraft Heinz matched the bid, bringing the total for the
    block to $8,200.

Prior to the auction, a bench was dedicated to the memory of Alice Koss, a
staunch supporter of the county's 4-H programs who passed away last fall.

Earl and Judy Scoville were announced as the recipient of this year's Lewis
County Agriculture Society Hall of Fame award.

One of the programs sponsored by funds from the cheese auction is the Dairy
Enhancement Calf Program, which provides a calf to a number of local youths
each year. Calves were paraded through the Cattle Show Ring by the youths
    they were awarded to.
