Services legislative committee on Tuesday afternoon (see full video below), regarding concerns over the Sheriff's office budget. The Sheriff had received an email earlier in the day from County Manager Ryan Piche, who is also the designated Purchasing Agent for the County, denying a purchase request for six long guns from a line item in the Sheriff's approved budget used for firearms and firearms training. Mr. Piche said that due to the current projections in Sheriff's overtime budget for personnel expenses, some discretionary budget items may be held back until the end of the year. So far this year, the Jail has used 162 percent of their budgeted overtime and the Road Patrol has used 80 percent. Current projections indicate that the Sheriff's personnel expenses will exceed the appropriated amount by nearly $100.000. The budget year runs through December 31. Mr. Piche said the County is trying to avoid last year's $178,000 shortfall in personnel expenses at the Sheriff's office that required contingency funds to fill the gap at the end of the year. This year the Sheriff's office budget was increased by 9.7% over last year's amount and totals around $5.3 million. The Sheriff noted that over $170,000 was removed from his original budget request during the budgeting process, stating that if he was appropriated what was needed to adequately run the department he wouldn't be in danger of going over budget.
