Lowville, NY- The Village of Lowville Board of Trustees on Wednesday voted
3-2 in favor of a 5 percent water rate increase for all users of the village water
    system, effective May 1st.

Trustees Edward Murphy and Danny Salmon voted against the move, while
Mayor Donna Smith, Trustee Joseph Beagle, and Trustee Charles Truax Jr.
    were in favor.

A public hearing on the topic was held on December 19, with the resolution
    tabled at that time.

The new rate will be effective for usage beginning May 1, 2019 and will first
appear on residential users' bills in November of 2019.

The rate increase came at the recommendation of the Village of Lowville
Municipal Board. A rate increase was deemed necessary to help fund the
infrastructure upgrades currently underway on the water system.

The water system operates like an enterprise fund, meaning it is not funded
through tax dollars, rather the income generated by usage needs to equal or
out pace the operating expenses of the system.

A 10 percent increase on water rates in the village was implemented on
    November 1, 2017.
