Lowville, NY- Officials at the Lewis County Department of Social Services
(DSS) would like recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
(SNAP) to be aware of potential impacts if the current partial shutdown of the
    federal government remains unresolved.

The program, administered at the state level, receives its funding through the
United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food and Nutrition Services
(FNS), one of the departments impacted by the partial government shutdown.

A notice from the USDA, sent to SNAP State Agency Directors in all states,
assured partners that eligible households will still receive their benefit in
January, based on language in the previous continuing resolution from
Congress that allocates funding for the program. February benefits would likely
be impacted if a resolution to the shutdown is not reached by then.

The notice also states that effective December 26, many FNS staff will be
furloughed pending reinstatement of funding by Congress, and will not be
    available by phone or email.

"We understand the uncertainty that these circumstances present for FNS
customers and partners nationwide,"  the notice stated.

According to the Lewis County DSS, none of their other programs are currently
expecting any impacts as a result of the shutdown.
