| Preparations Underway for Skating Season at Lowville Ice Rink as Organizations Prepare for Upgrades Needed Next Season 11/13/18 02:45pm |
transformation of Forest Park Pavilion, at the Lewis County Fairgrounds, into the Lowville Ice Rink for the winter months. Volunteers start the setup process each year following the conclusion of the farmers market hosted in the pavilion each Saturday through the end of October. Over the past two weekends, a crew of volunteers have made great progress on getting the boards and glass up, according to volunteer Joe Lawrence, with a lot of work left to do in getting the refrigeration system ready. The yearly goal is to have everything ready to make ice by Thanksgiving, Mr. Lawrence said. After that it becomes a waiting game with the weather conditions as to when the first ice is actually made. In the last 10 years, they have started making ice as early as Thanksgiving and been delayed as long as Christmas or the new year. There are a number of organizations that use the rink during the winter months, with the Village of Lowville providing rink supervision for public free skate periods. The Lewis County Amateur Hockey Association runs the youth hockey program, in addition to learn to skate and figure skating programs, which both start in late December or early January. You can contact the LCAHA for additional details on the programs. Organizations are currently raising funds for the much needed replacement of the approximately 40-year-old lines that run glycol under the ice to keep it frozen. Below is a release detailing the project and how you can donate if interested. |
