Lowville, NY- Residents in Lewis County now have an additional way to
connect with dispatchers in the event of an emergency, with a recent upgrade
in capabilities at the County's Emergency Dispatch Center in Lowville.

The Text-to-911 feature has been initiated in the county, allowing residents to
send a text message to 911 in an emergency situation.

Officials say that it is an important feature to add, but remind residents that it
should be used for emergency situations only- where it is impossible or
potentially harmful to place a phone call. The feature is not intended to replace
calling 911, but an additional tool in situations where calling isn't an option.

To use the feature, simply open a new text message on your phone, enter the
numbers 911 in the send to field and then proceed with your message.

Emergency dispatchers will receive an alert in their center, just like an incoming
phone call, and respond via text message.

For more on the new initiative we visited the Lewis County 911 Operations
Center for a demonstration and interview with Sheriff Michael Carpinelli,
included below. In the interview the Sheriff discusses some scenarios where
the feature can play an important role.
