Victory and Success at the Annual Udderly Rugged Run
was a success. On Saturday, September 22, participants braved the brisk morning temperatures as they ran up the tubing hill, through the woods, and over a variety of obstacles. The race has evolved in recent years from a team- oriented event to a trail run with obstacles designed to be conquered by individuals. “We want to provide a challenge,” says David Nisley, one of the race organizers and the Program Coordinator at Beaver Camp. “But we also want to have a race that isn't impossible. It’s an event for families, people who want to push themselves a little bit, and runners who are absolutely determined to win.” Maple Ridge Center and Beaver Camp are both owned by the Adirondack Mennonite Camping Association, which will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its summer camp program in 2019. The two locations often work together when planning events or programs for the community. “We have fun putting the Udderly Rugged Run together. Runners tell us they have fun, too.” says Nisley. “No matter what, everyone gets ice cream at the end.” This year’s event featured a new rope swing over a mud pit and an inflatable hurdle, along with over a dozen other obstacles throughout the course. “I think my favorite part was the trail through the woods. I love hiking, so it brought some of that to the run,” says Amber Desormo, who ran the race with her daughter and friends. “The kids loved it. There were definitely moments of struggle for them, like going up the tubing hill. But they were already asking when we could do another 5k at the end of the day!” Brian Zehr, who came in third place for the men’s division with a time of 00:33:16, says his favorite part was the obstacles. “I think there could be more. That’s what makes it more fun than a regular 5k.” Both recommend that future participants practice running on different terrains and elevations. “Hit the hills! Those inclines were no joke!” says Desormo. But at least there was ice cream. Men’s Division Roger Williams, 00:32:37 Conner Carpenter, 00:32:52 Brian Zehr, 00:33:16 Women’s Division Miranda Lehman, 00:33:24 Megan Kraeger, 00:34:59 Nicole Achtyl, 00:36:30 Results for the other runners are posted at www.mapleridgecenter.org.
