    Press Release from NYS DEC:

DEC ALERTS HUNTERS TO CONDITIONS AT REGION 6 WILDLIFE
    MANAGEMENT AREAS

Potential Impacts to Fall Hunting Opportunities in Region 6

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC)
announced today that conditions at several Region 6 Wildlife Management
Areas (WMAs) should be taken into consideration by hunters for their fall
hunting plans.  These conditions are due to lack of rainfall, ongoing
    construction, maintenance, and habitat management.

Waterfowl hunters traveling to Region 6 should note that water levels have
been low this year and are not likely to rebound in time for the Northeast
waterfowl zone opening day, Oct. 6.  Hunters at Perch River, Upper and Lower
Lakes, and Wilson Hill WMAs should be especially mindful that access into
    traditional areas may be difficult.

In addition, construction at the upper pool on Perch River WMA will limit
traditional access points and restrict parking. DEC asks that hunters obey all
signs and fencing in the area of the upper pool dike and parking areas and
keep a safe distance away from the construction site.
At Upper and Lower Lakes WMA, the floating dock at the middle access will
either be removed or blocked due to its unsafe condition. Replacement of this
structure is anticipated next year. In conjunction with the low water levels,
access at this location will be limited.

On Tug Hill WMA, logging operations may be occurring along the northern half
of Beech Street throughout the hunting season. This timber harvest is intended
to create habitat suitable for young forest dependent species such as
snowshoe hare, ruffed grouse, and American woodcock. Tug Hill WMA will
remain open, but DEC recommends that hunters avoid hunting along this
section of Beech Street when logging equipment is operating. Hunters should
also use caution when driving on WMA roads and yield the right-of-way to
    approaching log trucks.

For additional information contact DEC’s Regional Wildlife Office at 315-785-
2263. Region 6 covers Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence, Oneida, and Herkimer
    counties.
