Lowville, NY- Seven area students were provided an opportunity to experience
and explore the healthcare industry last week by participating in the summer
MASH (Medical Academy of Sciences and Health) Camp at Lewis County
    General Hospital.

The Fort Drum Regional Health Planning Organization (FDRHPO), in
collaboration with five regional hospitals and SUNY Jefferson, sponsors a series
of MASH Camps in the area.

MASH Camp is a unique opportunity for students in grades 8-12 to experience
and explore the healthcare industry in an interactive way. By participating in
hands-on activities that highlight various career opportunities, students learn
about the educational requirements, skills, typical job duties and personal
    qualities of specific healthcare professionals.

Additionally, involvement in MASH Camp provides students the opportunity to
network with healthcare professionals in their community to build long-term
    mentoring relationships.

The students at Lewis County General MASH Camp represented Lowville,
Beaver River, Adirondack and Indian River schools.

They participated in rotations through various departments in the hospital
throughout the week, including the lab, nursing home, radiology, intensive care,
physical therapy, emergency, adult day care and clinical.

We caught up with the group on Thursday, during an interactive presentation
with the LifeNet helicopter crew. Students were brought to the old Cilmax
Manufacturing building, just up from the hospital, as the LifeNet crew landed at
the designated landing zone for the hospital and spent about an hour with the
students. Students were given an overview of the air medical profession and
were given opportunities to ask questions to the medic and pilot.

“MASH Camp is often the catalyst that ignites the passion and interest of our
local students to further pursue their educational and career exploration in the
healthcare field,” said Tracy L. Leonard, FDRHPO’s Regional Workforce Lead.
“As a launching point in the regional workforce pipeline, MASH Camp provides
students the opportunity to make early and informed decisions about their future
academic and professional goals. It truly is a collective community effort aimed at
building a strong, sustainable healthcare workforce for the future."

MASH Camp is made possible by funding from the Workforce Development
    Institute.

Students interested in the MASH Camp program apply directly through
FDRHPO. Camps are generally held twice a year, with a summer camp and one
    during winter break.
