Lowville, NY- With little rain to speak of over the past few months, this past
week brought some much needed relief to parts of Lewis County. The National
Drought Mitigation Center had declared the entire county as experiencing
moderate drought conditions in their weekly update on Thursday.

In Lowville, just 3.65 inches of precipitation had fallen between May 1 and July
21, well below the over 10 inches normally received during that period, according
to data from the Northeastern Regional Climate Center (NRCC).

Things changed when a flow of tropical moisture entered the area on Monday,
with rainy periods all week. Lowville saw just over 4 inches fall during the week,
with the heaviest amounts on Wednesday and Thursday, according to NRCC
    data.

This brings the July total in Lowville to 4.73 inches, above the 3.56 inches
normal for the month. Year-to-date precipitation remains below normal at 18.10
inches compared to the normal 21.38 inches, making a deficit of 3.28 inches.
More precipitation has now been recorded this July than any other month this
year. January saw 3.91 inches and April had 3.54 inches.

The nature of the storms brought heavy rains at times to some portions of the
county while others experienced less. Data for Highmarket, provided by the
NRCC, showed 3.18 inches of rain between Monday and Friday, compared to
the 4.05 inches recorded in Lowville. Lewis County has three observers in the
CoCoRaHS network, who reported the following rain totals for the week:
  • 6.2 miles NE of Croghan- 2.42 inches
  • 1.2 miles NW of Constableville- 2.89 inches
  • 4.7 miles SSW of Harrisville- 2.94 inches

The National Weather Service forecast for the week ahead shows the possibility
of showers returning Monday night through the remainder of the week.

An update on drought conditions in the area is expected on Thursday.
