Carthage Man Airlifted for Treatment After
Striking Head on Submerged Rock in the Deer River

    Deer River, NY- Emergency personnel were dispatched to the State Route 26
    bridge over the Deer River in the Town of Denmark right around six o'clock last
    evening.

    Andrew S. Lauber, 24, of Carthage, stated that he was swinging on a rope swing
    over the water and fell into one of the submerged rocks, striking his head and
    causing a laceration to the left side of his forehead, New York State Police
    Troop D PIO Trooper Jack Keller said via e-mail.

    Mr. Lauber was transported by LifeNet helicopter to SUNY Upstate Medical
    University in Syracuse for treatment of head injuries. No further update was
    provided on his condition.

    West Carthage Fire, Copenhagen Fire and Lewis County Search and Rescue
    responded to scene. The patient had to be extricated from his location
    underneath the bridge. A landing zone for the LifeNet helicopter was established
    at the Town of Denmark highway garage. The scene was cleared shortly after
    seven o'clock.
