Town of Denmark resulted in serious injuries to a Bronx, NY man, according to the Lewis County Sheriff's Office. Investigator Ed Amelio told linkinglewiscounty.com that Esteban Santos, 29, was travelling northbound on Route 26 shortly after 6:30 this morning, en route to Fort Drum, when he exited the roadway near Johnson's Lumber. According to a witness, who was behind the vehicle, it appeared Mr. Santos was attempting to pass the vehicle in front of him, with an oncoming tractor trailer in the opposite lane. Mr. Santos then exited the west side of the roadway, driving through a lawn before crashing into a tree, Investigator Amelio said. The Sheriff's Office would like to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the accident as the investigation continues. Fires crews from West Carthage, Carthage and Copenhagen responded to the scene, along with Lewis County Search & Rescue, Carthage Ambulance and the Sheriff's Office. Investigator Amelio said it took 43 minutes and two sets of the Jaws of Life to extricate Mr. Santos from his vehicle. Mr. Santos was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, by LifeNet helicopter, with serious injuries. Investigator Amelio said he has two broken legs, two broken arms and a ruptured liver. A portion of Route 26 was shut down for a time so the helicopter could land in the roadway. If anyone witnessed the accident this morning, they are asked to contact the Lewis County Sheriff's Office at 315-376-3511. UPDATED 5:30 PM with Media Release from Lewis County Sheriff's Office: |
